2008 District Conference at Shepparton

The tone of the Conference at Shepparton, attended by Russell Gilbert, Geoff Camm, Bob and Chris Levy, Joan and Ken Sheehan, Geoff Slee, Bev Barnes, David Stewart and Joce Williams, was convivial combined with some excellent presenters. The themes of Rotary Shares was explored through 5 Plenary Sessions: Vocational, New Generations, International, District, and Community. There was a strong emphasis on the rural perspective: economic, environmental, social impacts of the current drought. The District has funded a very practical gift for each Club: a portable, fold-up, display banner for use at Rotary functions.

It was a source of reflected pride when Rotarian Russell Gilbert, together with his fellow travelers, rode their bikes into the conference assembly. The weather, the journey, called for tremendous commitment and endurance for the riders, and beneficiaries of their service will go to Ovarian Cancer. Congratulations to Russell.

The District Governor, John Davis gave a strong message to all Clubs: that in District 9800 some 20% of members are 80+ years old, and about 80% are 58 years+. The message for membership growth for new generations of Rotarians was clear!

In keeping with tradition, the Club was obliged to enjoy itself at a wonderful dinner, and the final night was a doozie! Next year? - Tasmania, based on the theme of 'Building a Better Future', 12-14th March 2009, Launceston. On to Conference Coordinator is now Rotarian Russell Gilbert.
