Rotary Awards 2007-2008

In April 2008, the Club’s Past President, current President and incoming President met to determine awards to recognize those who had distinguished themselves by example in service to others. The following awards were presented at the Change-Over ceremony held at Galli Vineyard and Restaurant, Melton on Saturday 21 June 2008.

Smith and Gilbert, Accountants in Gell Street were recognized for their generous approach to corporate social responsibility, and the commitment demonstrated by the principals. In particular, the Club wished to recognize the courtesy and contribution shown by the staff at Smith and Gilbert for their practical assistance to the Club in the interests of community service.

Two awards were made to Club members for their consistent participation in Club projects, and for their continued initiatives in fund-raising. As senior members of the Club, with previous awards of the highest caliber from Rotary, Ian and Margaret Wardell and Joan and Ken Sheehan were presented with a wall plaque acknowledging the strength of their fellowship to the President and Club members.

Three official Rotary International Awards were presented.

The Royce Abbey Award was presented to a Club member to recognize the enthusiasm shown, and a readiness to volunteer their skills and energies to Club endeavours in community service. The Award sets out to encourage members to maintain these attributes which are highly valued by the Club and Rotary International.

The highest award in Rotary, is to be nominated as a Paul Harris Fellow.

In honour of the founder of Rotary International, this award allows Clubs to recognize the values of Rotary International as demonstrated by others, and to acknowledge leadership in community service. One was presented to a senior Club member who has demonstrated commitment to Rotary principles, observed the rules of ethical conduct and relationships, and has actively contributed to and initiated community services in Bacchus Marsh.

The other award as a Paul Harris Fellow went to a sponsor of Rotary. Over many years, generous and consistent sponsorship funding has underwritten prizes for the Annual Art Show organized by the Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh. As the premier fund-raising event each year, (having just completed its 38th Show), the Club has ensured that the community of artists who exhibit in the Show are satisfied with the efficient organization and with the presentation of their work. Having earned an outstanding reputation, the Show thereby values the contribution made by sponsors in raising funds that are returned to local community groups and programs in Bacchus Marsh.

In summary, the awards for 2007-2008, recognized a local business, Rotarians, and a key sponsor to an annual Club fund-raising event.
