Cancer Council - Relay For Life
Relay For Life is an internationally recognised overnight event where teams from local communities join together to raise funds to support cancer research, education and patient support programs. The inaurgural Moorabool-Djerriwarrah Relay for Life will be held at Maddingley Park in bacchus Marsh on 29th & 30th March 2008. It will be 18 hours of FUN! A festive atmosphere will be created with teams camping out, free entertainment, games and some prizes - everyone is welcome to join in.
It’s a team challenge!
The challenge is for teams of 10 or more to gain sponsorship in their efforts to complete a relay-style walk around the oval. Team members take turns to keep their baton moving overnight, while enjoying fellowship with hundreds of other lively people on the track! Highlights of the event will include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Survivors’ Walk and a very moving Candlelight Ceremony in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer.
Many people and groups are responsible for the development and success of the event, including local government, sports groups, local businesses, volunteer committees, and many more. The Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh is a strong supporter of Relay For Life event. We were the second team to register and three of our members are actively working on the organising committee to ensure that the event is a great success.
Moorabool Shire Mayor, Di McAuliffe officially kick-started the Event at the public launch on Saturday, 17 November at Darley Markets. In her speech, the Mayor spoke of how cancer has touched most families in our area and said that this event would be a great community builder in our area. She gave it the Shire's strongest endorsement. Cr. Michael Tudball chaired the proceedings, in which the area coordinator for Relay for Life, Rob Petrie explained how Relay for Life operates, and the local committee's chair-manager, Paul Brown (Bacchus Marsh Lions Club) encouraged local groups to get involved and enter teams. A highlight of the presentation was a short interview and a talk by well-known local hero and Western Bulldogs footballer, Doug Hawkins, who is the patron of the event.
The crowd was entertained by musical and vocal items and an appearance of the Cancer Council's Syd the Seagull. The local committee was prominent in colourful Relay for Life Polo Tops which all participants will receive when they register.
This is an event for people of all ages and levels of fitness and is open to everyone in the community, with teams formed between friends, family and workmates. So please join us ... enter / join a team and join our community in the fight against cancer.
